Lesson 3

Conga

Now we’re going to make a short hop from the island of Puerto Rico to the island of Cuba. The rhythm you’re going to learn has the same name as the drum it’s played on: Conga. This spicy rhythm is traditionally played at the Cuban Carnaval celebration.

In this lesson, instead of learning just two parts from Conga, you’re going to learn three. You can hear all three parts played on conga drums on Track 19.

The first part you’re going to learn is four measures long. That’s twice as long as anything you’ve done so far! But you should have no trouble with it because it’s a rhythm you’ve probably heard somewhere before – like on an old episode of I Love Lucy. And you can hear it slapped now on Track 20 and drummed on Track 22.

To notate it on a single chart we’ve simply added another hand row. When you get to the end of the first hand row just continue on to the second hand row without missing a beat. And when you get to the end of the second hand row, go back and start over. The stepping stays the same throughout – you step on each pulse:
